‘Oliver’s Fort’: the Cromwellian Citadel of Ayr

Talk by Tom Barclay at Ayr Town Hall

By 1652, Oliver Cromwell had emerged triumphant in the civil conflicts which had ravaged the British Isles. He ordered the construction of several huge fortresses to control Scotland, and the sites chosen included Ayr. The talk will tell the story of Cromwell’s citadel, and explore its surviving remains – the most impressive in Scotland from this period.
