In 1960 Penguin Books were brought to trial under the Obscene Publications Act after they published the full unexpurgated edition of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover in Britain. Various academic critics and experts of diverse kinds, including E. M. Forster and Norman St John-Stevas, were called as witnesses. The not guilty verdict in favour of Penguin was delivered on the 2nd November 1960 and by the end of the year over 2 million copies of the novel had been sold – with more than 1 million more sold the following year.
