A Million Books for Free

BBC Million Books for Free

On Saturday evening BBC2 is devoting a whole night to books and reading.  Programmes include: A Million Books for Free: a Culture Show special, a film about the preparations for World Book Night; and there are visits to the World Book Night celebrations in Glasgow, Manchester, and London.

“When Jamie Byng told me about World Book Night, I was amazed not only by its magnitude but by its simplicity. The love of writing, the love of reading – these are huge gifts. To be able give someone else a book you treasure widens the gift circle. I was thrilled to be asked to support World Book Night, and doubly thrilled that The Blind Assassin was chosen to help launch it. Long may its voyage be!” Margaret Atwood.

World Book Night is about sharing, through word of mouth, the pleasure of reading. In the film, famous and non-famous readers talk about the books they really love.

And as the massive nationwide book giveaway gears up for the evening of Saturday 5 March, BBC cameras capture some of these passionate readers as they hit the streets to encourage other people to take books home and read them.
