A sewing workshop took place in Prestwick Library on Monday hosted by local author and designer, Shirley McLaughlan. Pupils from Prestwick Academy took part and brought along favourite articles of clothing to be customised and up-cycled as the event coincided with National Recycling Week Scotland 2015.
Shirley showed the pupils how to personalise and update their clothes using stitching, wool, and different trimmings. There was also a discussion about sustainability in relation to fashion, asking us to think about where our clothes are made and by whom and how we should care about these issues. The pupils really enjoyed learning stitching techniques from a successful designer and chatting with Shirley about her work.
Shirley’s book is called ‘Girls get stitching‘ and is available for loan from our libraries.
