Have a go at writing a song based on a book of your choice!

To celebrate the launch of an exciting new young adult title, The Last Summer of Us, the Reading Agency have launched a competition to get creative and musical juices flowing.

The Last Summer of Us by Maggie Harcourt is a stunning coming-of-age novel about friendship, grief and identity set in south Wales. Three best friends – Limpet, Jarod and Steffan – cram into a clapped out car full of regrets and secrets, on a journey that will change their lives forever.

The Bookshop Band has written two songs based on the novel. For a chance to win an iTunes voucher (£20 for individual entries and £50 for a group entry) young people are invited to have a go at writing a song based on a book of their choice!

The song should be at least five verses long with a repeated chorus. The deadline for the competition is Friday 17 July. Please send song lyrics to us by email or create a video or audio of your song and share it with the Reading Agency on Facebook or Twitter.

To help you get started, The Bookshop Band has put together their top 5 tips on how to write a song based on a book.
