Bookbug’s Big Giggle at Symington Library

May 22, 2017

We had a Higgledy Piggeldy Day at Symington Library to get some giggles for Bookbug Week and we had some very original fashion choices! We had tickle rhymes, a photo booth to get a souvenir snap with Bookbug, a mask making craft, a story called I Love You Just The Way You Are by Tammi Salzano (it seemed quite appropriate) and of course BUBBLES!!

The prize for best Higgledy Piggledy costume went to Emelie and Callan – superb costumes!

Time Travel Adventures and a visit from Bookbug to celebrate Book Week Scotland

November 28, 2016

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to Symington Library’s Chatterbooks event for Book Week Scotland. Cakes were eaten, George’s Marvellous Medicine was sampled, Golden Books were found, Ears were pinned on BFG and prizes galore were won! But most importantly of all, hundreds of cuddles were given to and received by our special guest ‘Bookbug’ (who was extra cuddly after all they cakes he ate!).

Well done the Chatterbooks group for helping make the day such a great success!

We went time travelling with author and creative writing teacher Janis Mackay, when she visited Ayr’s Carnegie Library. Janis talked about her Time Travel Series of books and encouraged us all to get writing. The children (and adults) were enthralled listening to Janis and inspired to put pen to paper and start writing their own adventures.

Keeping with the time travel theme for our LEGO Lucky Bag Challenge, we got very imaginative and built some terrific time machines to zoom back through the years to Auld Ayr!

Shiver me Timbers! Symington Library has been raided by pirates…

June 30, 2016

If you set sail across the salty sea to Symington Library recently there is a good chance you may have encountered some pirates among the bookshelves…

First to form a pirate crew were the Primary 1’s who came in pyjamas and learned how to become fantastic pirates by mastering such skills as ‘walking the plank’ and ‘scrubbing the deck’ before listening to a tale called ‘Pirates in Pyjamas’ by Caroline Crowe and Tom Knight. They finally abandoned ship and left with a certificate and a small piece of treasure!

Good job they left the ship spick and span because next on board were a crew of very fearsome Bookbug pirates. Aaarrr! They tracked down the treasure and kept a lookout for enemy ships!

Just as well because not long after came Symington nursery making two pirate raids on the library – morning and afternoon! They fought pirates, earned their certificates and listened to ‘Pirates Love Underpants’ before making off with some booty back to the nursery! Shiver me Timbers!!

Musical Bookbug session at Tarbolton Library

We had our very own mini Glastonbury during a recent Bookbug session at Tarbolton Library. The headlining act for this festival of fun was our very own library assistant Mark, who delighted fans with his musical talents. Cheers of delight went up in the crowd when ‘Roon Aboot, Roon Aboot’ and ‘Horsey Horsey’ were played, before a ‘dance off’ during the always popular ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes’.  The crowd eventually settled down to enjoy the Scots translation of ‘Room on the Broom’, before finishing up the session with ‘The Big Ship Sails’ and ‘Twinkle Twinkle’.

Around the world with Bookbug

May 18, 2016

This year’s Bookbug Week (16-22 May 2016) is celebrating ‘Around the world with Bookbug’ and we have been celebrating too!

On Monday and Tuesday our Bookbug sessions had an international theme to inspire children and adults alike to explore songs and rhymes from around the globe.

At Monday’s session we had lots of fun learning traditional Turkish songs and rhymes and sharing yummy treats.

On Tuesday, Bookbug shared songs and rhymes in French and scrummy madeleines. We also got creative with crafts. Where are we going to visit next…?
